Steam generator
irons can help you reduce your ironing time by up to 50 per cent
so if you do a lot of ironing or simply want the best results in the quickest time,
a steam generator iron is the perfect solution.
The best steam generator irons have more features than conventional steam irons,
so it pays to do your research to make sure you get the best steam generator
iron for your needs.
Steam generation
It needs no explanation that one of the most important parts of a steam generator
iron is the amount of steam it generates. By producing high levels of steam (measured
in grams of steam per minute), steam generator irons effortlessly relax deep creases
to make ironing easier and quicker. The higher the grams of steam per minute, the
easier ironing becomes because more steam will ensure even deep and difficult creases
can be penetrated and relaxed.
Depending on the model, steam generator irons produce varying amounts of steam and
there are two types of steam generator irons available: non-pressurised and pressurised.
Non-pressurised steam generator irons
Non-pressurised steam generator
irons produce 80 – 108 grams of steam per minute.
In comparison to a regular steam iron, which produces around 40 grams of steam per
minute, a non-pressurised steam generator iron can generate more than double the
amount of steam.
Non-pressurised steam generator irons however do not emit the steam with any pressure,
which means the steam lacks force and you have to work harder to iron out creases.
Pressurised steam generator irons
Aside from the amount of steam the iron generates, the pressure at which the iron
releases steam is also crucially important if you want to achieve perfect results
in half the time. Pressurised steam generator
irons are more effective at removing
stubborn creases because with pressures up to a maximum of 5-bar, the steam penetrates
into the fibres with more force. The higher the pressure, the better result.
Pressurised steam generator irons also produce more steam than non-pressurised steam
generator irons, typically around 100 – 120 grams of steam per minute. This ensures
maximum penetration into the fabric for ultra easy ironing.
Steam distribution
If you want the ultimate steam generator iron, also look at steam distribution.
The best steam generator irons will allow you to change the humidity, power and
direction of steam flow to care for your clothes while giving you effortlessly outstanding
results.
For example, if you are ironing a range of fabrics including a cashmere and linen,
you would ideally want a gentle lateral steam flow for the cashmere and forceful
vertical steam flow for deep penetration on the linen.
Sole plate
For great ironing results, the soleplate is a crucial element. The material and
design of the sole plate is important because this is the interface between the
iron and your clothes. A high quality ceramic sole plate is best because it will
be easy to clean and scratch resistant for effortless gliding. Also look for a wide
base for good area coverage and carefully positioned steam holes to relax the fabric
before the hot plate passes over, as this will make ironing easier and quicker.
Advantages of steam generator irons over regular steam irons:
- More steam and greater pressure, so easier, quicker ironing and better results
- Larger water capacity, so less refilling
- With the best steam generator irons you can vertical steam. This is great for curtains
and difficult to iron clothes, such as suits, jackets and silks as there is no need
for an ironing board – simply hold the iron in a vertical position at a short distance
from the fabric
Disadvantages of steam generator irons:
- More expensive than regular steam irons
- Some ironing boards are too small to accommodate the tank, so depending on the type
of ironing board you currently have, you may need to invest in a new one
- Steam generator irons require more storage space
