How do bagless
vacuum cleaners work?
Separation technology in bagless vacuums
Not all bagless vacuum cleaners are the same. The type of separation system makes a big
difference to the performance of the machine and the amount of filter maintenance
required. There are three main types:
Filter based
These are easily recognised as you can see the large filter inside the dust container.
With this type of cleaner, regular filter maintenance is vital. Washing and cleaning
the filter after every four to six uses is standard, but will vary with the manufacturer.
If the filter is not maintained, performance is dramatically affected.
Cyclonic units
The filter on a cyclonic unit tends not to be visible through the dustbin. Instead,
the design on the unit forces the air up into a vortex or cyclone. This speeds up
the airflow and forces out more dust into the dustbin. The result is the filter
does not have as much dust to deal with, reducing washing and maintenance.
The design of single cyclone systems makes a big difference to the result. The Hoover
Rush has an efficiency of 75% (75% of the dust stays in the bin and 25% hits the
filter). This compares with an average of around 65%* for most single cyclone units.
Multi-Cyclonic units
These vacuums offer the lowest maintenance. The multiple cyclones further speed
up the airflow and separate out the smallest dust particles before they reach the
filter. With the Airvolution system, the filters can go up to nine months* between
maintenance cycles.

in Hoover laboratory using IEC standard testing procedure.
Benefits of Airvolution, a multi-cyclonic system
With the Airvolution system, air and dust are forced up through the Airvolution
chamber into 12V cell clusters. The clusters accelerate the air creating massive
g-forces that force the dust out of the airflow, away from the filter and into the
dust chamber. This unique system creates the following advantages:
No loss of suction*
Because the dust is kept away from the filters, they do not easily clog. This ensures
the suction power remains consistent and does not decrease as the dustbin fills.
Low filter maintenance
Very little dust hits the filters, so they do not need regular cleaning. In tests,
the filter can go up to nine months of regular use before it needs to be cleaned.
Easy to empty
Just a quick press of a button and the Airvolution system can be removed and easily emptied.
Excellent dust pick up
No loss of suction means up to 220 air watts of suction can be consistently delivered.
This high wattage ensures excellent dust pick up. In fact, the Airvolution system
is Hoover’s best system for dust pick up.
Allergy UK approved
All Airvolution vacuum cleaners are covered by the Allergy UK Seal
of Approval. This means the system offers the highest standard of filtration and
dust management, and is suitable for allergy and asthma suffers.
